Architecture, Protocols, and Algorithms for Location-Aware Services in Beyond 5G Networks

The automotive and railway industries are rapidly transforming with a strong drive toward automation digitalization, the goal of increased convenience, safety, efficiency, sustainability. Since assisted fully automated train transport services increasingly rely on vehicle-to-everything communications high-accuracy real-time positioning, it is necessary to continuously maintain localization, even in occlusion scenes such as tunnels, urban canyons, or areas covered by dense foliage. In this article, we review 5G positioning framework 3rd Generation Partnership Project terms methods architecture propose enhancements meet stringent requirements imposed industry. particular, highlight benefit fusing cellular sensor measurements, discuss required protocol support for achieving at network side. We also fuse measurements onboard sensors. illustrate viability proposed fusion-based approach using numerical example.
